Cool Girl

Caitlin Rance

She knows more about fashion & the world that encompasses it then you think you do, and it's just kind of something you'll have to deal with. Eden is this weeks Cool Girl, get to know her.

So you clearly have a love for fashion, but you also love the models. On your blog you highlight a lot of your favorites, and aren’t afraid to state your opinions about them (whether positive or negative) So when did you realize you loved fashion and more specifically the casting aspect of it?

It’s the snowball effect. My love for fashion started very small-I knew who Alexander McQueen was, and I knew who Gemma Ward was because she stood out to me in his shows. After going through McQueen’s archives, I went even deeper into fashion and soon found more of my favorites like, Ghesquiere and Philo. I would look through each of their collections from the past 10 years, and that’s how I began to familiarize myself with models. The fact that I was able to recognize these girls in every context really struck a chord with me because I realized that I was able to appreciate their talent as models. From there, I decided I wanted to be a model agent, because I wanted to discover new talent. Being a model agent, however, limits the actual fashion aspect of the industry, which is why I want to be a casting director because it’s sort of a mixture of both modeling and fashion.

Do you go to college? And if so, how important do you think it is for people to attend?

I’ll be a student at the London College of Fashion in the fall. Education is definitely important for every position in the industry. Sometimes I get questions about girls wanting to model and asking for advice on how to break into the industry, but my advice is to go to college because at the end of the day, an education will take you farther.

What are 5 pieces that every girl should have in her closet?

Plain white t-shit, a good go-to pair of jeans, short black heeled boots, leather or jean jacket, and big sunglasses that cover half your face.

So a lot of us get in these weird moods, and often we don’t know how to get out of them. What do you do when you get in a funky mood?

Whenever I get in a weird mood I just need to sit in a corner for bit and collect my thoughts.

Most overrated model, and most underrated model in your opinion?

Most overrated model is Bella Hadid. Most underrated is either Ally Artel or Kayla Scott.

Best advice you’ve ever received that you would tell a friend?

Say “Yes” in that three second window of opportunity.

What was your favorite show from FW16, and were there specific elements that sort of sealed the deal for you?

Paco Rabanne! Julien Dossena is so underrated. The shoes were amazing, the print towards the end on a few looks was really modern, and the fact that it wasn’t trying to be anything that the Paco Rabanne brand is not.

A lot of people say the fashion industry, although heavily sold to a female demographic, is male dominated. What do you think is the hardest part about being a woman in fashion?

It’s very interesting. I think the hardest part is fighting for high position in companies that have been held by men in the past.

What’s one thing you absolutely love about the industry, and one thing you hate?

I absolutely hate the term “Instagirls” and comparing those girls to the original supermodels. I love new faces and I especially love when my favorite new faces walk in the top shows or get shot by Meisel.

If you could get paid to do anything in the world, what would it be and why?

Cast the Prada-show that’s the dream!! I think I could do a better job at finding the right girls for Miuccia’s shows…

What are elements that you think attract you to certain models? (feature wise, walk, personality?)

I always look for the girl who want to improve. One example is Greta Varlese-She’s constantly posting her runway appearances on her Snapchat, but I think the fact that she watches every show is really important. I also look for girls who aren’t generic looking, and girls that I would be able to point out from a crowd.

Who are you listening to right now?

Lot’s of throwback M.I.A!

What do you think it is about fashion that’s not only addictive but also attracts so many people?

The newness aspect of the industry. It’s human nature to want something new and the fashion industry is a great example of trying to avoid stagnation. It’s a dangerous aspect, but it’s also an important one that drives the industry.

Who is your ultimate icon?

Julia Nobis! Industry Icon, med school student, invisible from social media-she’s amazing!!!

How do you feel about the term cool girl?
