I've always found my inspiration through film and the soundtracks that go along with them. The ability to transport yourself into another world, even if only for a few hours, has always mesmerized me and kept me coming back for more.
Independent coming of age films specifically are my genre of choice. Though it'll probably change as I get older, I tend to gravitate towards this genre because I find myself relating to it much more than anything other. Independent films in my opinion have always had better, more realistic storylines that are sometimes controversial but totally relatable.
Below are my top four independent recs that are currently streaming on Netflix. Check them out, get inspired, and share with a friend
My first rec is Starlet. This movie came out in 2012 and features Dree Hemingway (über cool girl) and (late) Besedka Johnson. Taking place in Los Angeles, Jane (played by Dree) goes to a yard sale put on by Sadie, (Besedka) and after buying what seemed like a normal thermos, Jane soon finds literal wads of cash. Feeling stuck in whether or not to return the thermos (Sadie made it clear there were no returns) an unlikely friendship forms.
My second rec is a movie called Sky. This film features Diane Kruger and Norman Reedus (two extremely notable and talented actors.) Without giving too much away, this movie follow a French tourist on holiday in the Western United States trying to reignite her marriage. While some things dont go according to plan, Romy (Diane) meets a 'cowboy' along the way who literally flips her world upside down. I laughed, I cried, and fell completely in love with this film.
My third rec is Bang Gang. This independent is a French film, and is definitely not one for you if you're easily uncomfortable with nudity or sex. While I can't say I absolutely loved this movie while watching, I think I came to love it will I was able to process it after. I think this is kind of the perfect take on what it's like to be a teenager or young adult in Europe. While I'm obviously only speaking from a biased American perspective, I think it's refreshing to watch foreign films that don't freak out about the naked body and sex. Both are natural and completely normal. This is basically a coming of age film focused on friendship, betrayal, and love. While the ending isn't super realistic it's kind of that dream, "if only" ending.
My 4th rec is the independent drama: Teenage Cocktail starring Fabianne Therese and Nichole Bloom. This film was exactly what I'd been looking for in my next movie search. The way it's filmed, the characters, the storyline, etc. were all things I wish were touched on more in mainstream films. There was this huge Palo Alto feel to this film, but even with that it still held its own and left me thinking about it for hours on end even after the credits had rolled.
