COOL GIRL OF THE WEEK: PANDORA SYKES

COOL GIRL OF THE WEEK: PANDORA SYKES

Caitlin Rance

On this exqusite Sunday in December, I bring you Cool Girl of the Week: Pandora Sykes. As a woman who has influenced my personal style and drive to create content, I had the lucky opportunity to get to know the woman who does it all and looks fabulous doing it. Grab your coffee or cup of tea and get to know Pandora.

What’s a typical day in the life for Pandora Sykes?

Every day is different! It usually involves meetings, writing and lots of coffee.

How did you get into what you're doing right now? (Which is a lot! Fashion Features Editor and Wardrobe Mistress at The Sunday Times Style,co-host of The PanDolly Podcast, runner of her personal blog pandorasykes.com as well as a bit of styling and consulting on the side.)

Honestly? There is no quick answer! I just worked my butt off and took every opportunity that came and seriously read and wrote a LOT. There was a lot of crap on my first ever blog...·

What are the top five essential pieces every woman should have in her closet?

This sounds boring, but the older i get the truer I find this: a great white silk shirt, perfectly tailored black cigarette pants, a brilliant pair of black leather ankle boots, a statement coat and a pair of vintage levi's that took you 5 years to find and fit you like no other pair of jeans.

When’s the last time you cried laughing?

With my cousin, last week, remembering us both as teenagers.

We have a lot of young readers. What advice could you give to some that are considering a career in fashion?

I wish I had some great advice! Like in any career, do your homework. Study every magazine, every fashion designer, read every blog... there are so many resources out there these days, it's not hard to keep up.

If you could hop on a plane right now, where would you go?

Colombia. Where i am going at Christmas!

Who are you listening to (musically) right now?

Jess Glynn.

Vintage or Runway? Both

By plane or by Car? Both

Tea or Coffee? Both!

Black & White or Color? All of them!

To love or Be Loved? Both!

Denim or Leather? BOth!

Digital or Film? Both!

Heels or Flats? Heels

Eyes or Lips? Both! But not at same time

Book or Film? Both! But books will forever be my love

 Hot or Cold? Both

Glossy or Matte? Both!

Did you know from a young age that you were interested in the world of writing and fashion, or did that passion grow later in life?

I've always loved writing since I was teeny, always wanted to be a journalist and was forever writing short stories from my miniature desk - and also, fashion, but I never thought I'd work in it until around 5 years ago.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received, and have you used it?

Be the best that you can be - by that I take to mean, find your niche, strengthen your USP.

Many people say that the idea of print is something that will soon be completely outdated. The replacement being a completely online format. What are your thoughts on this?

I don't think it will happen in totality. I think magazines may become more like coffee table books. But people will always invest in the tangible.

What motivates you to get up every morning and continue to create?

Catholic guilt!

Who would you say is one of your biggest influences?

Leandra Medine. (ours too!)

If you weren’t working in fashion, what would you be doing?

Writing elsewhere. Or, interiors.

There’s a collective agreement that sometimes it can be extremely hard to get dressed in the morning. What’s an outfit that you can put on and know you not only look good, but feel good as well?

For me: a mini skirt, tights, black boots, cool jumper. Easy formula for a petite person.

Of course I also have to ask about beauty items! What are some essential products in your lineup at the moment?

NARS Creamy concealer, Eyeko brow gel, MAC lipstick in Ravishing, Oribe dry hair shampoo, Molecule 01 fragrance.

We live in an extremely intense political world at the moment. Women have been the focal point of a lot of conversations. What do you believe in your opinion is one of the hardest struggles women face currently?

The 'boys will be boys' locker room chat. I wrote about it recently, on my blog. Everyday sexism, basically. It's the insidious and therefore the most dangerous - because it' a sliding scale.

And lastly, what is your fashion secret?

There are no secrets.
