Cool Girl

Caitlin Rance

Besides answering these questions, what are you up to at the moment?

At the moment, I have just finished a day tanning with my friends and am about to get ready to go on a run outside since the weather in Los Angeles is beautiful, unlike the blizzard weather in New York. OH ALSO, I am on spring break and loving every second of it.

You have an amazing sense of style. When do you think you first got into fashion?

I have always loved dressing up when I was little in the little plastic princess heels and tutus, so probably from a very early age. My mom would always dress me in really adorable outfits and once I became old enough to start picking out my own things, putting together outfits just came easily. With that said, I have definitely looked back on middle school photos and questioned what I was wearing, but I guess, don’t we all? I would say I really knew I was interested in fashion and style around the age of 15 though, that’s just when everything clicked and I really began to experiment more and became less about what was trendy and more about just wearing whatever I felt like.

Do you have anyone, or rather anything that has been a key inspirer of your style?

MMm that is always a hard question for me to answer because I find inspiration from a lot of things. If I had to pick people though I guess I would say my friends, honestly. Sometimes I’ll put together an outfit or buy a piece that just reminds of a specific time or of a specific friend. I definitely just think I’m more of a bigger picture kind of thinker though, like I don’t necessarily hone in on any individual, but I love looking at movies for inspo, for example. Sometimes it’s not necessarily even the clothes of that film, but maybe even the architecture, hues, or music of the film.

As a native of LA, what do you think it is about Los Angeles that attracts people from all over?

Oh wow. That’s a loaded question because to me it is home, so what makes it so special is the memories that I have created and all of the huge milestones that I have overcome here. I mean the shopping is great, but I think from an outsider’s perspective, a huge appeal of LA is just the ambiance and environment. I think now that I have spent some time away from LA now, I can honestly say that it is the best city on the planet. The weather is always relatively nice (minus the few storms we’ve had this year), the people are just pretty chill and relaxed her, each little neighborhood has something special about it, and I think my favorite part is the fact that it is super “city-life”, but also has a lot of greenery and green spaces so that you don’t feel overwhelmed. I love that I can be on Melrose place shopping at Reformation in one second and then drive up the street and be at Runyon canyon, that is something I really miss about LA when I’m gone. LA is just such a versatile city.

You attend school in New York, so the city is basically your campus. What do you think are the advantages as well as the disadvantages of a city campus?

Well the part that I both love and hate is the fact that I have pretty much become a mini-adult. All the responsibilities an adult would have to deal with like making sure I have food in the house, that I have clean laundry, that my countertops and bathrooms are disinfected once a week… I have to do. Which is awesome though, like I really think transitioning into real adulthood will be very easy because of this. I also think that going to a school that is so intertwined with the city allows to make great connections and to just experience so much more, a different type of learning if you will. For me, a huge city girl, I love the constant stimulation of the city. I feel like there is always something to do which is definitely an advantage over a typical college experience where it might be more limited. With that said, there are also some disadvantages, at the school I attend, there isn’t much of a campus or university community. I like to put it as a New Yorker who happens to take classes during the day. Being that it is in the city, we don’t really have a campus, and we don’t have a huge football or basketball team, everyone just kind of does their own thing. Which I personally love, but to some that might be hard. This aspect of my university, NYU, also makes it a bit harder to make friends right of the bat, but patience fixes that.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received, and have you used it?

The best advice I have ever received is from my brother who told me to “live my truest life and that the key to happiness is within me” and I really have taken that to heart. My brother is really into finding his cosmic self and reads a lot of psychedelic books so I’m always super receptive to whatever he has to say. I think in this day and age, it’s so easy to feel like you aren’t good enough or feel pressured into doing things in fear of how others will perceive you, but sticking to things that “truly” make you happy should be all that matters. I think it is super important to look in the mirror and be able to say you are happy with the person you are and that you are a living a 100% authentic life. Like for me, I love going out, but a lot of the time I prefer to stay in because it honestly just makes me happy and as a 20-year-old in the city, I feel like there is always constant pressure from friends and what not, but I think it’s really important to just go with your gut and just “do you”. I’ve also been told that “time heals all wounds” which is pretty corny, but I truly believe it works. Whenever I worry about something, big or small, I always remember that a year from now, whatever I am feeling in the moment (anger, frustration), it won’t matter to me, so there is no point in getting fussy about it.

Who’s the best person you follow on Instagram at the moment?

JEANNE DAMAS – she is ultimate cool girl vibes and a constant inspiration! She is so effortless and cute. (agreed.)

When do you feel most you?

I feel most me when I’m going on runs or driving alone with music on. I also feel most me when I am with boyfriend, Sam, I can pretty much do anything that I would do alone, when he is there which leads me to my next point. I guess more often than not, I feel most me when I am alone and AWAY from my phone. As much as I love technology, I have found that is really toxic sometimes to have a constant influx of what everyone is doing, achieving, buying, etc.

Who comes to mind when you think of an icon?

I think of Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, David Bowie, Madonna, Rihanna, Beyonce, Che Guevara, MLK, Jane Birkin, Selena, Alexa Chung – Mostly people who pertain to modeling, acting, or had some greater cultural significance.

What would you say are the top five pieces every girl should have in her closet?

I think five staple pieces are a pair of denim jeans either blue or black that fit you so well you just want to do a happy dance in them, one pair of hip sneakers because they are practical/functional, any article of clothing that is red/gingham for the spring, a t-shirt that is both chic, but comfy so you get an effortless look when you’re running out of the house, and black boots! More than anything though, I just think you should always own things that make you feel beautiful and confident.

How do you feel about the term, cool girl?

I love it. I never really know what people mean when they say I am cool because I think I am the like one of the weirdest and dorkiest people I know, but it is definitely very flattering to be told. I also think the term cool girl is great because “cool” is such a vague word so it allows for a variety of meaning and each cool girl of the week gets to showcase that.

Top five beauty products that are vital in your daily beauty/skincare life?

1. VASELINE – I am an addict. It’s only like 3 dollars and yet it does so much. I put it on scars, my chapped skin, AND my eyelashes as a cheap, but effective growth serum that makes them grow long and thick.

2. Glossier Priming Rich moisturizer is also a staple of my beauty routine, I’ve already gone through 3 and they’ve come out pretty recently. I am a huge advocate for glowy and hydrated skin, so I am always applying.

3. Mario Badescu Rose Water Spray – I use it as a toner, facial mist when I’m hot, and before and after I apply make-up to set it.

4. Bioderma Micellar Water – I use it to remove my make-up and in the morning. It is so sensitive on your skin, yet gives you that deep clean that you need in the morning and at night.

5. Odacite Vital Glow serum – AMAZING for when my skin needs that extra hydration and it doubles as aroma therapy. When I am done applying a few drops to my face, I rub it all over my hands and place my hands a few inches away from my face and take in the delicious aroma.

6. Had to add one more, because I cannot live without mascara! My favorite is the Diorshow.

Who are you listening to musically right now?

This very moment I have blasting Joey Badass and Kendrick Lamar since both of them have recently dropped new albums and they are FIRE!!!  The past couple of weeks though I’ve been listening to Jerry Paper, Smog, Young Fathers, Blood Orange, Alex G, Homeshake, xxyyxx, thundercat, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Christopher Owens/Girls, Fat White Family, Foxygen, Spiritualized, Sonic Youth, amy whinehouse, francoise hardy, Sports, Clams Casino, Neon Indian, Dean Blunt, Skepta – I’ve been more into rap lately and Jazzy tunes, but that usually changes when the spring and summer comes around then I listen to ultra-girl bands like Alvvays (one of my faves) or something with a beachier vibe.

OOOh my! My fashion secret? I would definitely say the TAILOR because then any garment can be made for you and mixing and matching super expensive pieces with 1 dollar pieces, so I guess vintage is definitely one of my secrets. I am always getting asked where my clothes are from and most of them time, they are vintage and one of a kind ( at least for this era).
