COOL GIRL OF THE WEEK: TILLY VIOLET

caitlin rance

Were back with another Cool Girl and I think you will thoroughly enjoy this Australian babe! So without further ado my friends, meet Tilly.

What are you currently doing right now? (besides answering these questions)

Its 5am and I’m in bed under 35 blankets listening to reggae.

What’s a typical day in the life for Tilly Violet?

If I told you I’d be arrested.

If you could do anything in this world and on top of it get paid for it what would it be?

I just like making people laugh, so I guess ideally I would have large quantities of cash thrown at me as I try desperately to amuse people.

Do you believe in any rules when it comes to fashion?

I am not a fan in rules in general; when everyone is following the rules things tend to stay the same. If fashion is to keep to rules then there is no way for it to evolve, so to approach style with preconceived ideas of what is acceptable is just going to hinder your creativity. With that being said, don’t ever wear a mullet dress. That shit is not on.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

Thinking of the future terrifies me a little bit. I'm just about to finish high school and it is incredibly bizarre to know you are on the brink of the beginning of your life. In the next year everything will begin to fall into place and hopefully I will find a way to be doing the things that I love. All I can hope is that in ten years I will be having a really good time and making things that I believe in.

What was the last best movie you saw?

The Boat That Rocked.

Who’s your all time favorite designer?

I have never really followed designers or brands. A lot of the clothes that I wear are my mothers from the 70’s to 90’s and most of the labels have come off due to the continuation of time and extreme dancing.

Has there been anyone in your life that has influenced you, whether it be through fashion, an interest, or just living your life?

My parents have been huge influences. They are the most eccentric and original people I know. Because my father lives in the US and my mother lives in Australia they have raised me separately, which has allowed me to know them more as individuals rather than as a parental unit. Their humour, intelligence, friends, style and appreciation for life have had major influences on what I love and how I live.

What are your top 5 beauty essentials?

Every morning I wake up looking like I’ve got two black eyes so concealer is a large part of who I am as a person. Paw Paw cream is this natural ointment that can do anything from moisturizing your lips to exorcising a demon, so I use a lot of that. My other three beauty essentials are sex, drugs and rock’n’roll.

What do you think, in your opinion, is the hardest struggle girls/women are facing right now in our present day time?

The romanticising of mental illness, especially on social media. People on the internet are getting younger and younger and they are really susceptible to the things that they are seeing on places like Tumblr, where you can find thousands of blogs dedicated to illnesses such as depression. They just post black and white photos of sad, thin girls captioned with depressing and badly composed Punk lyrics. Its fantastic that we are in a world where people are being really open about their mental illnesses and its becoming less taboo, but its suddenly being turned into a quirky characteristic and something that makes you interesting and different.

When do you feel most you?

When I'm alone in my room in the middle of the night blasting music, drawing and painting. This usually involves huge amounts of glitter, which has resulted in a thick layer of sparkles coating my entire bedroom.

How would you describe your style?

It’s a combination of 1950’s greaser, widow attending her husbands funeral and schoolgirl.

Who would you consider an icon in your eyes?

So many people are labeled as ‘icons’ or ‘heroes’ which I’ve never really understood. We are all equally terrible and wonderful.  Maybe you are doing something iconic but I think generally that label just places people on a pedestal.

Dream Man?

15-year-old Michael Cera.

Dream Woman?

Also 15-year-old Michael Cera.

If you could hop on a plane right now where would you go and why?

New York. I have been having separation anxiety from the loves of my life, my father and New York City, and I am dying to go see them.

What are you listening to (music wise) right now?

I was religiously listening to Father John Misty’s album ‘I Love You Honeybear’ and Tame Impala’s equally brilliant album, ‘Currents’, for a long time. Rap is something I hold very dear to my little white heart. I like the old-school New York sound a lot; A Tribe Called Quest, Camp Lo, Big Pun, Mobb Deep, Craig Mack etc.

What do you think are the top 5 essentials everyone woman should have in her closet?

The staples of any wardrobe are a black leather jacket, skinny black trousers, black Chelsea boots, samurai sword and the Bible.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received, and have you utilized it yet?

“Get it the fuck together”, and I whilst I am yet to put this into action I can really understand its point.

When was the last time you got super excited?

On my eighteenth birthday. My friends and mother conspired some surprises and I was completely overwhelmed with excitement and love for the people around me.

Who do you think is super underrated right now?

Kali Uchis, a Colombian singer, director and producer.

Do you think social media is a blessing or a curse?

It has the capability to absolutely destroy you because you’re usually making yourself vulnerable on the internet, constantly being exposed to criticism.

How do you feel about the term “Cool Girl”?

I don’t think anyone is “cool”. We are all just flailing around trying to impress people before we meet our inevitable demise. Isn’t that a nice, laid back way to end the interview?

HUGE shoutout to Tilly for this hilarious yet lovely interview!
